Moates began his relationship with SCF more than 47 years ago. In 1967, he played for then Manatee JuniorCollege. His team played for the state title in 1967 and won the state title in 1968 while finishing second in the country. He was named All-American and signed with Florida State University.
In 1969, Moates signed with the Washington Senators which later became the Texas Rangers. In 1977, he joined the New York Yankees. He played four Major League seasons and six seasons in the minors, winning two AAA championships and one A championship as well as Player of the Year honors.
In 1993, Moates returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach for the team that won the state title in 1994 along with five conference championships. In 2011, he returned once again as an assistant coach to the SCF Manatees squad.
Moates is very proud that his two sons, Robby and Jeff, also played for SCF, with Robby’s team finishing second in the country in 1991. He is thrilled to have played, coached and had a son play in Grand Junction.
Moates holds a bachelor’s degree from Florida State University and a master’s degree from Nova Southeastern.
