Three SCF Teams earn NJCAA All-Academic Honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- NJCAA Headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo., today released the 2011-2012 NJCAA All-Academic Teams. State College of Florida's baseball, tennis, and volleyball teams earned this honor. Over 450 teams qualified for academic team accolades. Nearly 60,000 student-athletes competed in the NJCAA for the 2011-2012 academic year on more than 3,500 teams in 28 different sports. The 2011-2012 season marks the 29th year the NJCAA has recognized the success of its student-athletes in the classroom. With minimal changes, the NJCAA academic awards program has been in place since 1983.

TYLER, TX- The SCF Manatees Tennis team finished the tournament by winning more national championship matches on championship day than any other team in the tournament. Even with this outstanding performance the Manatees were unable to over come the total team points to over take Tyler Junior College for the national championship. Championship Thursday action: In #2 singles, the #1 seed, Mariana Palacios, came from behind to defeat #5 seeded Audrey Leitz of TJC in three sets, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-0. In #3 singles, Lai Wei rallied back after losing the first set 2-6 to defeat the #1 seed Nelo Phiri of Tyler Junior College. The final score of the match was 2-6, 6-1, 6-0. The #4 singles match up again pitted SCF against TJC. Anne-Sophie Porry took three sets to defeat the #1 seed, Alejandra Enderica 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. The #1 doubles team (Palacios and L. Porry) fell in the championship match to TJC, 7-5, 6-2. SCF's #2 doubles (A. Porry and Wei) defeated the #2 Broward doubles team, 6-3, 7-6(3). This was a rematch of the FCSAA State/NJCAA Region VIII championship which was won by Broward in April. SCF's #3 doubles (Martinez and L. Lapp) added victories against Jones County Community College and Snead State to win the consolation bracket. The final team standing are below: FINAL Team Totals 1. Tyler - 47 2. TYLER, TX- Day 3 of the NJCAA National Tennis Tournament was busy for the Manatees as all singles were in action as well as six doubles matches. The Manatees were 10-2 on the day and in the hunt for the national championship. Five singles players and two doubles teams have qualified for the national semifinals, to be held on Wednesday. L. Porry lost to K. Cartwright (Tyler Junior College) 6-0, 6-1 M. Palacios defeated I. Echezuria (Meridian Community College) 6-2. 6-1 Wei Lai defeated Y. Kunishima (SPC) 6-3, 7-6 A. Porry defeated A. Hawkins (New Mexico Military Institute) 6-3, 6-3 A. Martinez defeated P. Garcia (Broward) 6-3, 7-6 L. Lapp defeated A. Fouts (Temple) 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 #1 Doubles defeated Eastern Arizona 6-2, 6-2 and Georgia Perimeter 6-3, 6-2 #2 Doubles defeated Seminole State 6-0, 6-1 and ABAC 6-3, 6-2 #3 Doubles lost to ASA 6-3, 6-2 and defeated USC –Lancaster 6-0, 6-0 in consolation Team Totals (Day 3) 1. In day two of the NJCAA national tennis tournament, all six of the singles players for SCF won in straight sets. In # 1 Singles Laurence Porry defeated Amy Evans of Itawamba 6-0, 6-1. She will face the #2 seed of the flight Kerrie Cartwright of Tyler Junior College at 8:30 am Tuesday. In #2 singles Marianna Palacios, the #1 seeded player in flight 2, defeated Sommer Burnett of Itawamba 6-2, 6-0. She will face Ivanna Echezuria of Meridian Community College Tuesday at 8:30 am. In #3 singles Wei Lai, defeated Rylee Smith of USC Lancaster and will take on Yurina Kunishima of St. Pete College tomorrow at 8:30 am. In #4 singles, Anne Sophie Porry defeated Ashley Pedro of Eastern Arizona 6-0, 6-0 and will face Alyssa Hawkins of New Mexico Military Institute tomorrow at 8:30. In # 5 singles, Abby Martinez defeated Katy Adams of Meridian Community College 6-0, 6-1 and will face Paula Garcia of Broward tomorrow at 9:45. State College of Florida Tennis is #2 in the Nation according to the April 16th, 2012 Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll. The Manatees are current FCSAA/Region 8 Champions and will compete in the NJCAA National Tournament in Tyler, TX on May 6th. (Bradenton, Fla., April 20, 2012) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) Manatees Women’s Tennis team, in its second year of existence, claimed SCF’s first tennis state championship, winning the Florida College Systems Activities Association State tournament. The Manatees will advance to the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament from May 6 - 13 in Tyler, Texas. SCF is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation. TAMPA -- It didn't take the State College of Florida women's tennis program to become a Sunshine State powerhouse. The Manatees won seven of the nine singles and doubles titles Saturday to cruise to their first state championship, winning the Florida College Systems Activities Association tournament at Hillsborough Community College, in just the second year of the program's existence. SCF scored 25 points, outdistancing second-place Broward Community College by 9.5 points. The title sends the Manatees to the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament May 6 to 13 in Tyler, Texas. SCF is ranked No. 2 in the nation behind the host, Tyler Junior College. SCF's Mariana Palacios, Lai Wei, Ann-Sophie Porry, Abby Martinez and Lacey Lapp all won individual state singles titles with straight set victories. The Manatee's top singles player, Laurence Porry, dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to St. Petersburg College's Greta Veinberga in the final. Porry and Palacios won the No. 1 doubles championship, and Martinez and Lapp took the No. 3 doubles crown.

TAMPA, Fla- SCF Tennis defeated Hillsborough Community College with a combined team win of 9-0. SCF is (11-5) overall and (11-0) in FCSAA/Region 8 competition. SCF is undefeated against all JUCO competition for the spring 2012 season. Their only losses were to NCAA Division I and II teams. The Manatees head to the FCSAA/Region 8 Tournament on Friday, April 13th as the only undefeated team in the state.
