Bradenton, Fla - Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) extended an invitation to State College of Florida's Maria Medina and Iulia Sergheeva to compete in the 2016 ITA Oracle Cup (formerly known as the ITA National Small College Championships). Participants earn qualification for the tournament by winning their respective ITA Regional Tournaments or by at-large invitation by the ITA. The tournament is played in Surprise, Arizona October 13-16.
Maria Medina finished the 2016 spring season ranked as the #2 player in the nation. She was national runner up at the 2016 NJCAA National Tournament. Medina has been invited to participate in singles and doubles at the ITA National Small College Championship. At the spring NJCAA National Tournament Maria was named the ITA's 2016 "Rookie of the Year."
Iulia Sergheeva won the 2015 ITA Florida Regional Tournament and is doubles partner with Maria Medina. The two won the 2016 FCSAA State/NJCAA Region 8 doubles championship in the #1 double draw. Sergheeva was named the ITA's 2016 "Player to Watch" at the national tennis tournament this spring.
Maria Medina will face Maraiana Alverez of Hinds Community College (MS) in the first round of the singles draw. Medina comes in as the #2 seed in the tournament. She takes the court at 11:30 am EDT on Thursday October 13th for this opening match. In doubles, Medina and Sergheeva are, also, the #2 seed. At 4:00 pm EDT for a the first round match against Mississippi Gulf Coast.
