SCF Basketball's PA announcer, Manny Zafiros, part of historic Final Four at Wichita

Life can begin at any age. All you have to do is create a little magic.

Manny Zafiros took care of that detail 48 years ago when he went played for the first Wichita State men's basketball team to reach the Final Four.

Until this weekend, it was the school's only Final Four appearance.

Zafiros has stayed close to the sport. For the past four years, he has been the public-address announcer for the State College of Florida basketball team and was the athletic director at the old Bradenton Prep.

He recently celebrated his 70th birthday and has become a celebrity.

Zafiros was in Los Angeles when Wichita State won the region championship last weekend.

He was one of two players from the 1965 Wichita State Final Four team in Atlanta on Saturday, and the media was chasing him around like he was Justin Bieber.

BRADENTON — Isaiah Williams looked one way and saw guns, drugs and a chance to make fast money. He turned his head and saw a basketball.

Most kids in his downtrodden Newark, N.J., neighborhood would've taken the risk and gone for the cash.

Williams isn't like every kid.

He picked up his basketball, went to the playground and shot and shot, and dribbled his way out of the streets.

But nothing has come easy for the 20-year-old State College of Florida freshman.

MANATEE -- The State College of Florida basketball team did what it was built to do.

The Manatees ran St. Petersburg College ragged to earn a 93-73 Suncoast Conference victory on Wednesday night at Hal Chasey Gym.

With only two games left in the regular season, the triumph puts SCF in control of its own destiny. If the Manatees win their final two games they will capture the conference championship and earn a trip to the state tournament.

Going up against a bigger SPC squad, SCF (22-6, 5-2) never stopped running and pressured the ball most of the game. The Titans couldn't keep up with the frenetic pace, and the Manatees broke the game open in the second half.

After a great weekend with the New England Patriots winning their playoff game and Tom Brady proving once again why he is not only better than Peyton Manning, but the best QB in the game it is now time to gear up for conference play! We have a tough non-conference game tomorrow night at Santa Fe. They are (3-0) after the winter break with 2 convincing wins over Suncoast Conference teams. We are (15-4) coming off a tough home loss against a very good Central Florida team. It was a game where we did not compete at a level we need to in order to beat a top 5 team in the state. Hopefully, our team bounces back and is focused for 40 minutes tomorrow night in Gainesville, FL against the Saints.

These Manatees are fast and furious (Sarasota Herald Tribune)

BRADENTON - It takes fast fingers, sharp reflexes and forehead-crinkling concentration to be part of the State College of Florida’s basketball team.
Just ask Blake Ress.
Player?
No, he runs the scoreboard.

“You can’t just sit there and be casual,” Ress said. “You’ve got to be into the game.

“Sometimes you’ll have to ask somebody else, ‘Who hit that shot?’ ”

In a turnaround of dizzying proportions, SCF’s carnival-ride offense has averaged 98.7 points per game through 19 games this season, which ranks second in the nation among junior college teams.

Through the season’s first 18 games, SCF actually led the country with an average of 104 points per game. The high-flying Manatees have scored 136 points once, 124 points twice, and had stretch of eight straight games with at least 100.

We are heading into the 2nd semester of school which means we are about to begin conference play! We obviously had a tremendous first semester going (13-3) and finishing ranked #6 in the state. There were so many great highlights throughout the 1st semester, however, one of the best was when I was told our team GPA is a 2.68. I am certainly very proud of our team working hard both on and off the court. This shows they are not only focused on winning but also graduating and preparing to move on to other institutions and representing the State College of Florida.
