Tennis Keeps Rolling with Win Against St. Petersburg
The State College of Florida Tennis cruised to victory over the Titans, 8-1. The Manatees started the match with a sweep of the doubles. Getting the Manatee’s on the board first was Miranda Talbert and Sarah Peek at the #1 position. They beat the unbeaten tandem and #12 ranked Jazz Whittaker and An Tagashira 8-3. Finishing off the sweep of the doubles were Natella Nabieva and Ameina Houston at #2 winning 8-3 and Casey O’Toole and Mikala Lowrance at #3 who won 8-6.
#1 Nabieva started slow losing the 1st set 6-3. After falling behind 2-0 in the second she won 6 of the next 8 games to capture the second set 6-4. Since the Manatee’s had already won the match a super tie-breaker was played for the third set. Seeming to have the momentum Nabieva started serving 1st in the tie-breaker and lost not only the 1st point but the next 5 played to go down 6-0. Although fighting hard, Nabieva was unable to find her game losing 10-3.
Coach Taylor stated “I am very proud of our team today. Our win was a total team effort. Natella had an off day and still almost won the match over the #16 player in the nation."
SCF will play #7 Broward on Sunday at 10 a.m. at home.
