Turhan Douglas Named Head Coach of Indoor Volleyball

State College of Florida Names Championship Coach Turhan Douglas Head Coach of Indoor Volleyball; Will Continue Leading Beach Volleyball Program

 

BRADENTON, Fla. — The State College of Florida has named Turhan Douglas as the new head coach of its women's indoor volleyball program. Douglas will continue in his role as head coach of the Manatees' beach volleyball program, leading both programs into a new era of competitive excellence.

A three-time national champion, Long Beach State Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, and veteran collegiate coach, Douglas brings more than three decades of championship-level coaching, recruiting, and player development experience to SCF. Widely recognized as one of the nation's premier volleyball coaches, he has guided athletes from the youth level through NCAA Division I and the professional ranks while helping hundreds of student-athletes earn opportunities to compete in college.

"Coach Douglas has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to developing student-athletes and building successful programs throughout his career," said Athletics Director, Nick Cichielo. "His championship experience, proven leadership, and passion for the game make him the ideal person to lead our indoor volleyball program while continuing the outstanding work he has done with our beach volleyball team."

Douglas began his volleyball journey as a standout student-athlete at Pierce College, where he played under legendary coach Ken "Big Daddy" Stanley. As team captain, he helped lead Pierce to a California State Championship before continuing his playing career at Long Beach State University. There, he was a member of the 1991 NCAA Division I National Championship team. His distinguished accomplishments as both a player and coach later earned him induction into the Long Beach State Athletics Hall of Fame.

Throughout his collegiate coaching career, Douglas has built winning programs and developed championship cultures at every stop. As head coach at the University of Southern California, he guided the Trojans to a Top-4 national ranking while assembling back-to-back No. 1 nationally ranked recruiting classes. He later captured an NAIA National Championship at California Baptist University, further cementing his reputation as one of the sport's elite program builders.

His coaching résumé also includes successful tenures at Santa Monica College, Pierce College, and Antelope Valley College, where his teams consistently competed for conference championships and postseason success. Along the way, Douglas has earned multiple Coach of the Year honors.

Beyond the collegiate game, Douglas has made a lasting impact on the national club volleyball scene. As head coach of Santa Monica Beach Club, he led his Junior Olympic squad to an international gold medal victory over Canada while continuing to mentor elite young talent.

Over the course of his career, Douglas has helped develop more than a dozen Olympians and professional volleyball players while mentoring hundreds of athletes who have gone on to compete at the collegiate level.

Known for his energetic leadership and commitment to athlete development, Douglas emphasizes technical excellence, high-performance training, leadership, accountability, and a championship mindset. His holistic approach prepares student-athletes for success both on the court and in the classroom.

Now leading both the indoor and beach volleyball programs at State College of Florida, Douglas brings an unparalleled combination of championship experience, recruiting success, and a proven ability to elevate programs. His vision is to build championship-caliber teams while fostering an environment where student-athletes can thrive academically, athletically, and personally.
